Somo of tho mothers of the prize-win aors at ihn recent baby shovr presented the 'xiselveo at the Sink in the morning aa<J Hbked for their prizes, but were informed that these could not be paid until Mr Donnolly returned. O a enquiring at the Rink lest night our representative was informed that Mr Donnolly went to Wellington in order to open a baby show in that city, and that he had hurried away in order to forestall Mr Maccahe, who, it was believed, was bent on a similar enterprise. The Peojected .Exhibition in London. — Relative to the proponed tr&usfereoce of the Dunediu Exhibition to London, the Otago Daily Times says : — At the lowest we should say that Parliament must sanction an outlay of £100,000. Whilst the Colony is considering whether it is prepared to embark upon an enterprise of this magnitude, the Government would do well to sound the Agent-General as to the probability of suoh an Exhibition being favourably received in London, and the possibility of obtaining the tuox>f the, baildiflga at South Keneingtoa. . ■;' -. •:.V-';'\'--.- : - :; , ■";:'■-:. iy -.. ■ ■■■'■■•■■■•

Ail prize winners and members o£ tho Pioneer Bicycle Club are requested to attend. All j officials connected with the meeting aro cordially invited, together with the newspaper representatives. The Volunt3er3. — A Government parade w&3 held yesterday evening, when the following Compauies were on parade : — City Guards, Captain Bishop, 34 ; Scottish Rinea, Captain Campbell. 33; Richmond Itifles, Captain Bowroii, 65 ; Irish Rifles, Captain Whiteeida, 44. Total 176. Major Newall wii3 in command, \mt the wet weather prevented umeh work from being done. Stdknham Borough Council. -— Tho election of a Conncillor to fill the seat on the Sydenham Borough Council rendered i vacant by the election of Councillor Booth to the Mayoralty, took place yesterday, and resulted in the roturn of Itfr John Brown, son of Mr J. T. Brown, timber uaerchant, who polled 351 voteß. Hia opponents .vere Messrs B. R. Mufliett and John Forrest, who polled 151 and 17 votes respectively. The Midland Railway. — It is expected that tho Nelson Creek — Ahanra section ot" the Midland Railway, about six miles, will bo ready for traffic by tho end of Jaminry. Tho contractors for the section from Ahaura to Reefton, Messrs J. R. Rces and Co., have loat no time in getting to work, and hare now some 800 men engaged on the job. Tenders for the first Eccbion westward from Springfield closs on Saturday next. Exhibition Fire Brigade Gathering. — Mr W. Harris will bo f^i.id to receivo subscriptions towards defraying the exjienaes of the visit of the Fire Brigade to Dunediu. Tho sum of £'?0 is required for the purpose, and there enn be no doubt that property owners and others recognising the excellent services rendered by the j Brigade will williugly outoeribp the j amount. Ex-firemen, who are willing to i act in case of alarms during the Brigade's i absence in Duuedin are requested to give i in their names either to Mr Smith or Mr \V. Harm by Friday nest. j A Suitable Gift. — By the kind assistftuce of Mr W. P. Brook, Secretary to tho i Canterbury Saleyarda Compftuy, who procured the subscription 9, Mr Joseph, Hill, i better known as " The Carver " wa3 mado the recipient *of a substantial Christmas present; from the patrons oi the luncheon roomy at xhe Sale-yards. Mr Hill has officiated in the capacity of carver afc tiicee rooms ever since they were opened, and has gained the respect of all with whom he has come in contact. Mr W. Henderson, Chairman of Directors, in making tbe present, expresßedbiß ow n andhis confreres' good opinion of Mr Hill ill a i'ov well chosen sentences. These comments wero supplemented by Messrs J. T. Miitson, J. M'Bcath and others. Mr Hill duly acknowledged tho compliment. A Hint for the Railway Atjtitokitikb. — A frequent; traveller by the express suggests that an exceedingly valuable arrsugement can be inado for tho convenionce of the public. It is o£ten desired to send a telegram to some one travelling by the express, to be delivered at a given Btation. To fiod the person addressed, however, ia not always an easy matter, and the messenger not infrequently has to take the telegram back with him. The suggestion is that a board sbonld he conspicuously placed on the guard's van, with the notification, "Telegrams for passengers;" that all telegrams should 'be given to the guard, and that he should write on the notice board the namea of those to whom they are addressed. Further, that in tho carriages a notice should be put up calling attention to the new departure. New Year's Day at Lyttelton. — To-morrow thab time honoured event the Lyttelton Regatta wiil be held, and it tho weather is fiie the accommodation provided by the Railway authorities will ba taxed to the utmost. The Committee have beenhavditt work comple- ing thi'ir arrangements, and besides the presence of two of Her Majesty's warships, a four-masted Bailing vessel and other minor attractions, a grand di&piay of fireworks 13 to take plnee on the water of the inner harbour, which should prove very attractive. Last, bub by no means least, comes the exhibition of high rope walking by the Australian Blondin. He takes part in the torchlight procession during the evening, and after the display of firewoiks on the water he gives his second exhibition on the wire, the effect being added to by numerous coloured fires being burned. Altogether j the fortieth annual regatta promises to give some of its predeceseors a " big start/ j Christohtjech Liedertafki..— As was I anticipated, the members of the Christchurch Liedertafel received a hearty welcome from tho large audience assembled In the Exhibition Concert Hull. The attendance waa all the more gratifying j from tbe fact that the hall had been packed with people on tho two previous nights, and it might have been fairly ! imagined that concert-goera had been somewhat satisfied with music for tho next fewdays. However, those who wereattracted to the Liadevtiifel concert received a full measure of satisfaction from the talented body of gentlemen who are specially viaitiugDuuisim with the idea of lending a pleftiUtiit variety to tho mueical programmes of the Exhibition. No complaint can be mada of a want of appreciation of their praiseworthy venture, for encores wore *'.-equent and the applause genuine ana prolonged. Front first to laßt the concert w&a fan undoubted success, and we doubt if tUe Duntifiin p.iblic have ever before had a ri. iier musical treat. At the second concur u, on Saturday evening, there waß a ', .r\ } attendance, and of the work of the Ra!'l:.t, tee Olago Daily Knwssoyß: — M? !rLr.u£i.t t.iok the place or Mr Gray, ■who l:A b.-en called away, and saag To:;?
