Fatal Accident. — A boy named Timothy Horgan, ton years old, was killed yesterday afternoon at Tai Tapu by the capsizing of a trap. . * Highland Fling. — By an advertigement appearing in this issue, ib will be seen that the time for receiving entries for Misa Georgia Smithson's prize, at the Tuam Etreet Hall, has been extended to eight o'clock. Lakkiic INIBM. — This morning a number of lads were heavily fined for committing wanton mischief on Christmas morning. A report of the cases will be found in another column, and should be read by any v/ho contemplate committing similar folly on New Tear's morning. New Zealand Chess Toubn ament. — The New Zealand Chess Tournament is fixed to begin on Thursday next at Dunedin. The ! only Christchurch competitor is Mr H. Hookham, other local players being unable to spare the time necessary. It ia confidently expeote'd that Mr Hookham will i make a good record. Cbickkt.— On Saturday a cricket match was played between West Melton and 1 Springaton on the West Melton Becreation Ground. Springeton scored 40 runs in their first innings and 28 in their second. West Melton 19 in their first innings, and then scored 52 riu?s~ for three wickets in theirs second, thus winning the match with seven wickets to spare, The highest scorers were Messrs J. Marshall 18, and D. Marshall 18 (not out) for Springßton, and 0. Saunders 19 (not out), and E. Vaughan 11 (not out) for West Melton. Qdeen'b Own Lodge, No. 36, P.A.F.S.— The quarterly summoned meeting of the above Lodge was held on Monday evening ; the attendance wa3 very good. Bro William Bultitude, W.M., was in the chair. Correspondence w&3 received from the Grand Lodge congratulating the Lodge on the great increase in members during the past six months ; aleo a letter from Pioneer Lodge, Dunedin, expressing hearty good wishes for the great success of the Lodge recently. The Visiting Sick Committee reported a clean sheet. The Investigation Committee reported favourably on twelve more candidates lor initiation, and, on a ballot being taken, they were all elected. This being the last night for the competition for the prize to the member who brought in the most candidates, a special effort must have been made, for when the proposition of new members was asked for, twenty proposition papers were handed in. The election of officers for the ensuing twelve months, resulted as follows : — Bro H. Skinner, W.M.; Bro J. Middelton, D.M. ; Bro T. E. Toneycliffe, Secretary ; Bro W. E. Skelton, Treasurer j Bro A. R. Kinnmouth, Senior and Bro K. J. Mitchell, Junior Elder; Bros Dillon and Cole, Auditors j Bro Rev J. G. W. Ellis and Bro Maxwell, Chaplains ; Dr Irving, Medical Officer ; Judicial Committee — Bros R. Maelay, J. Hanna, J. L. Stubberfield, E. S. Simas and Kinnmouth.
