The election for a person to occupy the position of Mayor of the Borough of Lyttelton took place yesterday. Very little interest was manifested in the proceedings, it .being looked upon by many as a foregone conclusion. Councillor Milsoni had been in the field for some time, having baen requested to stand by a large number of residents. Indeed, when ie became Irnown that Captain M'Lellan had been nominated, it came as & surprise to not a few. The result of the contest proved that those who looked upon the thing as "all over bar the shouting" were wrong, as Councillor Milaom was only victorious by four votes. The election of Councillor MilEoin to the position of Mayor makes a complete change in connection with Municipal affairs at Lyttelton, for tho position for Bomeconsiderable time has been occupied by three persona only; and a large section of the residents have frequently expressed their desire that the position should be more general amongst those who have served the town in other matters. The Eeturning Officer (Mr H. J. V. liogers) declared the result as follows : — J.B. Milsom, 133; H. M'Lellan, 134.
