Supreme Court. — His Honor Mr Justice Denniston returned from Wellington this morning. A Bitting of tho Supreme Court for criminal, civil, and divorce cases will begin on Dec. 2. Trade Marks.— The rules and regulations with respect to the registration of trade marks and industrial designs, &c, have now been gazetted ; as also the rules for the registration of patent agents. The Exhibition. — Detective Benjamin, who was sent by Government to the Melbourne Exhibition, where he was on duty \ for some months, passed through Christ- j church this monungonhisway to Danedin, where he will be stationed during the coming Exhibition. Popular Sports. — Tho Sub-Committee j entrusted with the task of getting up the art union in connection with the Popular Sports have secured a shop in Luck's ! Buildings, Colombo street, wherein to i display the very good collection of prizes they have obtained. The Sumner Cave.— The exploration of the cave discovered on Mr Monck's property at Snmner has been concluded, but has not, it is Btated, resulted in the discovery of any more objects of interest. No j implements were found in the inner cave, j all the objects which were obtained having I been found on or near the surface of the ground in the outer cave. Frozen Meat.— Killing at the Frozen Meat Works, Belfast, will be suspended for a fortnight, in order to allow of a general cleaning up, and the completion of sundry minor works in connection with the establishment. A busy season is anticipated when they re-open, as a very large number of Bheep have been booked for killing; the average will be about 30,000 a month for several months to come. Morbib Tube Bifle Match. — The following will represent the Hope of Christchurch Lodge in the return match with I the Dauntless Lodge, 1.0. G.T., to-night, at 7.30, at Messrs Kent and Corrick's range : — A. Cowan, Phelps, Young, Efford, Walker, M'Cready, Long, Frost, Agessez, Palmer. Emergencies, Buggy and Atkinson. The above are particularly requested to attend, as on no account will the match be postponed. Volunteering. — It will be remembered that at the last Easter Encampment the officers of the companies which constituted the First Canterbury Battalion decided to expend the balance of the battalion funds in obtaining a trophy to be competed for by the various companies, and to be awarded according to the results of the annual volley and independent firing. As the firing in question is now in progress, it is expected that the Committee which was appointed to attend to the matter will meet shortly to make arrangements for procuring the trophy. Christ^ College Eifles.— The Christ's College Eifles went through their volley and independent firing at the Bromley range this morning. There was, a good muster, forty-nine members being 1 present. The figure of merit was 29*30. The other rifle corps which have done their volley and independent firing in. the North Canterbury district are the City Guards, figure of merit, 23G7; Eangiora Eifles, 30-07;' Kaiapoi Eifles, 28-80. The lastnamed Company did not have two-thirds of the roll strength present. Presentation. — Mr H. J. Jenkins, excaptain of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, who has recently entered the bonds of matrimony, waß on Monday evening last presented by his fellow-Clubmen with a handsome liqueur stand in commemoration of the interesting occasion. The presentation was made by Mr Parker, Captain of the Club, who referred to Mr Jenkins' long connection with the Club, and the esteem in which he is held by the members. The recipient suitably acknowledged the gift, after which the ceremony was brought to A close, by the toasting of Mr and Mrs Jenkins, which was received with -musical honours. Shorthorn Bull Sale. — Messrs J. Wilkin and Co. sold one of Mr John Deans' pure-bred Shorthorn bulls during the progress of the Bale on the Show Ground on Nov. 2, which was omitted i from the sale list reported in these columns. The bull was purchased for sixty guineas by Mr J. D. Ormond, of Napier, and waa shipped for there in the Wairarapa on Thursday last. He took second prize in the champion class for bulls of any age, and was much admired for his symmetry and other good points, j He comes from the best breed of Shorthorns i that has ever been represented here, being by Duke of Gunterstone out of Flower-of Brunswick, who have always been prize winners. ; The Wool Sale3.— Upto the present the number of bales of wool to be offered by auction on Friday morning amounts to 3250. The catalogues, however, will be fcept open till to-morrow night, so that it is probable that fully 4000 will be subi witted. En Route fob Dtjnedin.— A number o£ northern residents arrived here by the Te Anau in the early part of to-day. They are on the way to the centre of attraction now to be found in the southern Province. Among them was Mr W. M. Hannay, Kailway Commissioner, who goes to superintend the railway business. Infoebiation Cases. — The list of information cases set down for hearing at the j Magistrate's Court to-morrow, includes six | against hotelkeepers for breaches of the j Licensing Act; about a dozen against •I drivers of vehicles for infringing the proj visions of the Hackney Carriage By-law j during tlie race week ; several for nonj registered dogs, and a few more of the usual miscellaneous character. An AiAEairNG Eepobt. — This afternoon the police received a report that a man had been seen riding about the Burnham district with arms in his possession. From what had been observed of him, it was concluded he waa a lunatic. When last seen he was making in the direction of Eakaia, and no doubt more will be heard of him and his weapons. Immediately on receipt of the information, Inspector Pender communicated with the Sunnyside Asylum to ascertain whether any of the inmates had escaped, but a reply was received in the negative. Rhodes Convalescent Home. —Mr Strouts, Honorary Secretary to the Convalescent Home, has had a collection of very excellent photographs taken for the Exhibition at Dunedin. They include a view of the premises in the centre, and around this are grouped views of the entrance hall, corridors, dormitories, private patients' dining and bed rooms, and the drawing-room. They all mark the excellence of the interior arrangements of the home, and should convince* the public of the benefits to be derived from patronising co useful a building, which is justly entitled "The Sanatorium of the Middle Island of New Zealand." The photographs have been suitably mounted and framed, and are on exhibition at Messrs Fisher and Sons' picture shop, Triangle, to-day and to-morrow. Graceful Compliments. — Every night at the Theatre Eoyal Mr and Miss Warner receive,.not only repeated calls before the curtain, but also numerous bouquets. Last night several specially handsome floral tributes were given to these popular artists. The young lady received a basket full of choice flowers and a bouquet skilfully constructed in the form of a fan; and the gentleman received a wreath of bay, with flowers inserted at intervals among the leaves. Broad satin ribbons were pendent from each of the gifts, and these ribbons were beautifully inscribed with appropriate mottoes and the names of the recipients, &c. In addition the donors had attached their cards, on which were neatly written the following legends: — "You have witchcraft in your lips, Kate (Shakspere). Miss Gracie Warner ; " "A tribute to the association of every natural grace, with the fullest artistic promises. Mbb Gracie Warner ;" and "Th' applause! delight! the wonder of our stage (Ben Jonson). Charles Warner/' H.A.C.B.S. — Presentation. —At a specially summoned meeting of the St Patrick's Branch of the H.A.C.B.S. held last night in their hall, Barbadoea street Bro D. Steinmetz, P.P., was made the recipient of a Maltese gold cross and past officer's certificate, as an acknowledgment of his past valuable services to the Branch. The President, Bro Nelson, in making the gift, alluded in felicitous terms to the respect that Bro Steinmetz was held in by the brethren, and to the admirable and enthusiastic manner in which he had always worked for the good of the branch. Bro Steinmetz replied, expressing the pleasure it "gave him to assist in making the branch a success, and thanked the brethren for their handsome gift. The croß3 was the work of Mr J. F. Stratz, and was highly admired for its excellence of finish. On one side is the inscription — " H.A.C.B.S. Presented to Bro D. Steinmetz, P.P., St Patrick's Branch No. 82, 1889," and on the other appear the harp and shamrock, in relief. There was a full attendance of members, who subsequently adjourned for harmony, when a very pleasant evening was spent. Court. Stab of Canterbury. — The bimonthly meeting of Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, A.0.F., was held on Monday evening at the Foresters' Hall. There waa a fairly good attendance, including Bro Bowen, D.C.R., Bro T. Gapea, D.T., Bros Hudson and Gapes, Trustees, and the Court Treasurer, Bro H. Crooks, who occupied the chair during the evening. A letter was read from Bro J. Farmer, J.W., resigning his office on leaving the town, and Bro G. C. Year, P.C.R., was unanimously elected to the vacancy. The proposed testimonial to Bro S. Shawcross, Permanent Secretary of the Order in England, was held over for a time. Be the Friendly Societies' demonstration on Anniversary Day, a strong Committee, consisting of Bros. Kent, Stevens, Straw (2), Dale, Smith, Wood, Eastwood, and Davidson were elected, with power to add to their number, to prepare a tableau emblematical of the Order, to take part in the procession. All necessary properties of the Court were placed at their disposal, and ample funds for additional requirements, the Court expressing a wish that every member would strengthen the hands of the Committee. After the proposing of two candidates for membership, the Court was closed by the acting C.ti. The receipts were £20 Is lOd.
