Charitable Aid.
» [Pkb Press Association.! DUNEDIN, S2pt. 19. The Secretary of the Education Department, Wellington, has written to the Charitable Aid Board, threatening to stop from the subsidy the arrears for the maintenance of indigent children in the Industrial School. The Board, in their reply,- point out that since the passing of the Amendment Act of 1886, by which they were made liable, they have not been in possession of funds to pay the claim in full, but have reduced the claim by JS6GO in the last two months. They state that all payments have been made with great reluctance, because of their objection to the retrospective legislation, by which they were made liable, and because of the dissatisfaction with the arrangement by which they are compelled to pay large sums for the maintenance of the school without being allowed a voice in the 1 management. While admitting that there ; is power to atop the subsidy, they point out that the carrying out of such a course, or even conveying threats in that direction 1 , will not tend to reduce the present friction in the relations between the Board and the Government.
