♦■ [Per Press Association/] LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Thursday, Sept. 12. AFTERNOON SITTING. FIRST READING. The West Coast Settlement Reaerve Act Amendment Bill was read a first time. PUBLIC WORKS ACT. The Public Works Act Amendment Bill was recommitted. On the motion of the Hon E. C. J. Stevens, the following was added to Clause 14 :—" Construction of bridge includes an addition to the length of a bridge, or the building of any portion of a bridge which has been destroyed by fire, flood, tempest or accident, or the entire rebuilding of a bridge which, in the opinion of the Minioter, requires to be entirely rebuilt." The third reading was fixed for Saturday. NAVAIi AND MIIiITAUY 6ETTLEBB. The Hon E. C. J. Stevens moved the second reading of the Naval and Military Settlers and Volunteers Land Bill. The Hon G. M'Lean moved that the Bill be read a second time this day six months. The Council divided, and the second reading was agreed toby 15 to 11. NORTH ISLAND RAILWAY. The North Island Main Trunk Railway Loan Application Bill was read a third time and passed. The Council rose at 5 p.m. till tomorrow.
