* " Cantbkbubt Times."— The agricultural columns of the Canterbury Times are made especially interesting this week by the introduction of a number of original papers dealing with Colonial stock and produce. The force and effects of the recent gale are described by correspondents from all parts of the Colony, and there is an instructive article on the proposed extension of the Ashburton scheme of irrigation. The champion sculling race on the Thames affords the writer of aquatic notes an opportunity to discuss the past form and prospects of the great Australian oarsman, and everyone should read the excuses the Auckland footballers offer for their defeat at the hands of the Canterbury representatives. There ia again a very j liberal supply of tales, sketches, and \ general reading matter, and every line of our contemporary may be perused with pleasure and profit. Supreme Coobt. — His Honor Mr Justice Denniston sat in Banco to-day ; he leaves for Hokitika to-morrow morning. Boaed of Education. — The Board of Education met this afternoon and transacted a considerable amount of business, a report of which appears elsewhere. Midland Cricket Club. — The annual meeting of this Club is advertised to take place on Saturday evening next, at halfpasfc eight o'clock, at Warner's Commercial Hotel. Telegraphic— ln consequence of the effects of the storm, the Telegraph Department have issued an order to the effect that only urgent messages can be accepted for the North. Vincent v. The Queen. — In this case His Honor Mr Justice Denniston to-day gave judgment, upholding the verdict of the Jury fcr the petitioner, and dismissing the motion for a new trial, with ten guineas costs. Chbistchubch Liedebtafel. — The next smoke concert of the Liedertafel will be held on Friday, Sept. 27. The attention of members of the Society may be drawn to the fact that there will be no practice this week ; but a special practice will be called for Monday next. Ths Auckland Football Team. — The "Auckland Reps," as their own journal styles them, were passengers from Dunedin in the Tarawera to-day, on their way North. They were in town during a greater portion of the day. • Arrests. — This afternoon Detective Neill arrested a man named John Black on a charge of stealing a gold scarf pin, value £1 10s, the property of Alexander Burns, of Armagh street, on Sept. 1. About the same time Constable Koater arrested a girl, about fifteen years of ago, charged with stealing two rose bushes from the garden of Mr Andrew John Park, Cashel street. i The accused will be brought up at the Magistrate's Court to-morrow. West Chbistchubch School Committeb. — The usual monthly meeting was held on Wednesday evening, Sept. 11-, J resent— Mr D. Reese (Chairman), Messrs . Munnings, W. Pirie, J. Wendelken, and a.. Alfrejs. Messrs Kirk and Winny sent apologies. It was agreed to constitute the whole Committee an Entertainment Committee, and hold a special meeting in a fortnight's time to arrange matters in connection with it. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Board and urge the necessity of improving the ventilation of the infants' schoolroom before the hot weather sets in. Tenders for the supply of stationery for the ensuing twelvemonths were received from Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, H. J. Wood and Co., and Fountain Barber, and the tender of the latter was accepted. The Board forwarded the Inspector's reports on the main and side schools, which were generally satisfactory. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to JBIS 4s 2d, and the meeting adjourned; bprinjr, bountiful Spring.
