« « IMPQKCANT TO MERCHANTS. The following circular has been issued from the Department of Trade and Customs:— " Department of Trade anttCusioms. "Wellington, Sept. 3, 1889. "As the intention of Circular-526 haanot been rightly understood by those who haye not had the opportunity of reading it in connection with Circular 518, General Order 98 and Section 54, whence, as yon know, the words 'apparently accidental omission, &c./ are quoted, the Commissioner has instructed me to say that it was to meet the case of so-called 'mistakes' that are really, although possibly unintentionally, offences against the law by which the importers would benefit if undiscovered to the prejudice of the revenue and other importers. Post entries may be accepted as ÜBual in all cases of merely clerical errors or 'obvious mistakes discoverable* on the ' f aco ' of au entry. You will be so good as to explain this to importers and agents, and point out to them that all depends upon themselves, and that they have nothing to fear so long a3 ordinary care is taken in correctly making out entries, also that whenever in doubt about any article the marking of the words ' for examination ' against it on the entry will be -sufficient protection. " H. S. M'Kbllab, ''Secretary and Inspector."
