Union Rowing Club.

The twenty-first annual meeting of the Union Rowing Club waaheld last night at Warner's Hotel. There was a very large 1 attendance, and the chair was occupied by ! Mr H. Thomson, Vice-President. ANNUAL EEPORT. The following was taken as read : — Your Committee, in presenting the statement of the Club's transactions for the year ending August 31, 1889, do so wifch the feeling that on the whole the past season has been one of success, and leaves the Club in a very satisfactory condition. From the annexed balance-sheet it will be seen that the revenue from all sources amounts to JS3I4 7s Bd, and the expenditure to .£274 93 9d. This may seem a heavy expense for a season's working, but ia explained by the fact that a large portion of it has gone in the purchase of new boats, which your Committee considered advisable to order in time for the opening o£ the coming season. The membership continues to show an increasing tendency, the total number of members on the roll being now 131, consisting of 119 active, 4 honorary, and 8 life members. Thirty-nine working members were elected during the season. The Club races were heartily entered into by the members, and the attention given to them will bear favourable comparison with any previous season. It is highly gratifying to have to chronicle the facb that these races have been the means of bringing out several new members who promise to do good service for the Club during the coming season. During the past season the Club was represented at the Akaroa, Lyttelton and Christchurch regattas, but with only a small amount of success. This, we think, was due in a great measure to having, in almost every instance, had to put forth new crewa. As the experience gained in the past should bear fruit in the future, an improvement may be looked for during the ensuing season. The following Dew boats have been purchased at a total cost of .£9B 10a :— One wager sculling boat, by Donnelly, of Sydney ; one racing stump and one large pleasure boat; by E. D. Raes, of this city. In addition to these your Committee have ordered a racing four from Gt. Norton, of Wellington, at a cost of about MO. This boat will be finished by the end of November. A supply of oars and sculls ordered from Messrs E. Ayling and Co., of London, should arrive early in the season. These, with the racing four, will be a charge on the revenue of the ensuing season. The Chloris and Nikau your Committee sold to the Jjjyttelton Rowing Club for J837 10s. The Club's fleet comprises twenty-ono boats, consisting of two racing outrigger fours, one racing outrigger pair, two racing stump outriggers, one wager sculling boat, four practice fours, two practice outrigger pairs, two practice whiffa, and seven pleasure boats. The plant and shed are in good order, and are insured for JJIOOO. With the view of maintaining uniformity in colour, width of hoop, &c, in the uniform worn by members, and obtaining jerseys and caps on the most favourable terms, your Committee deemed it advisable to take advantage of the visit of our Treasurer to London, and order a supply direct from the manufactories there. The new colours are expected to arrive daily, and your Committee trust that their action will meet with your approval and support. The rules, by-laws, and racing rules passed at the special general meeting held on April 10, will require to be confirmed at this meeting before coming into force. Your Committee cannot bub express its deepest and most heartfelt regret at the loss which the Club has sustained by the death of its late President, Mr George Gould, a regret in which it is sure every member participates. The thanks of the Club are due to those members who reudered valuable asasistance during the season aa " coaches," and also to Messrs H. Thomson, J. Toovey, G. Bonnington, and B. Petersen and Co. for prizes given. FINANCE. The statement of assets and liabilities showed a credit; balance of .£738. Mr F. Kesteven announced that the new nniforms were on board the Rimutaka, and would be in Christchurch in a few days. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following were elected for the coming season : — President, Mr Joseph Gould ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs John Anderson, A. Loughrey and H. Thomson ; Captain, P. D. Kesteven; Deputy-Captain, F. E. Hyman ; Hon Secretary, P. Ledsham ; Hon Treasurer, G. Mason ; Committee, Craddock, Hawkes, Atack, Allard, Forbes, Foster and Wharton; Auditors, S. C. ' Xesteven and T. L. Smith. Mr J. Gould was elected Trustee in place of the late Mr George Gould. Messrs F. D. Kesteven and F. E. Hyman were elected delegates to the New Zealand Amateur Bowing Association. The re-elected Captain and DeputyCaptain returned thanks for the honour done them; and the former promised to give a prize to be competed for. BKVISION OF RULES. It was agreed that the Committee take into consideration the desirability of increasing the Club's accommodation, and report to a future general meeting.
