The Fourth of July.— The anniversary of the Independence , of America was hailed this- morning by the stara and stripes being floated in the breeze over several buildings in Christchurch, notably the Palace Rink. No other public acknowledgment of the occasion has been attempted this year. New Police Court. — The Provincial Council Chamber, which has done duty for some time as a Police Couit, is not to be desecrated in this way any longer. A far more comfortable and convenient room has been appropriated for the purpose, and was used for the first time this morning. It is the room facing the lawn in front of the old Provincial Buildings, and was formerly known as Bellamy's^ Mr Walker has had it capitally fitted up as a Courthouse, and here every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday the Justices will in future deal with the criminal business. One special feature in favour of the new room is that there is a total absence of draught from which those engaged at the old room suffered. Industrial Protection League. — The Christchurch Branch held its usual weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 2 ; the President (Mr D. Shaw) occupied the chair. The debate on the' Government Electoral Bill was adjourned to next week. A Parliamentary Sub-Committee was appointed. The following resolution was unanimously carried, and ordered to be forwarded to Mr Ballance : — "That the Industrial Protection League of New Zealand begs to tender its congratulations to the Hon John Ballance, M.H.R., on his election as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, as the Protectionist body is of opinion that his election to the position witl prove of great value to the Colony." After .transacting some routine businese, the meeting adjourned. The Master of the Queen's Jubilee Memorial Home debires to thank Mr Priest, of Wooiaton, for his kind present of flower roots, &c; also Mr Hanker, Woolston, for flower roots.
