o " At Home." — The Canterbury Mounted Bifles announce that they will hold an " At Home" to-morrow night at Hobbs' Buildings. Proposed Bazaar. — About forty ladies attended the meeting convened yesterday at Eangiora, for ths purpose of arranging for holding a bazaar in aid of the Volunteer Drill Hall building fund. The matter was taken up most enthusiastically, and it was decidedto hold the bazaar in November. All preliminary arrangements were made before the meeting closed. Avonside Literary Association.— At tho weekly meeting on Tuesday evening last, an interesting paper on " Federation " wa3 read by Mr Douglas, which provoked a good deal of adverse criticism. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the essayist. The subject for next Tuesday will be an essay on " Education," by Mr Craig. Halswell School Committee. — At the meeting held on May 20 there were present Messrs H. A. C. Pergusson (Acting-Chair-man), C. B. Candy, J. Pergusson, P. Blowers, James Kennedy. An apology was received from the Chairman on account of indisposition. Mr Wood's inspection report was received, and was considered mo3t satisfactory. Diocesan Synod.' — The Diocesan Synod sat till nearly twelve o'clocklastnigb.t,and elected after a long diecussion a Select Committee to enquire into the position of the estates under the control of the Church Property Trustees, &c. A report of the proceedings will be found elsewhere. Tho Synod meets again at four o'clock this afternoon. Palace Eink. — A fairly numerous audience assembled at the Eink last night to witness a polo match on skates between teams representing the Palace Eink and Linwood. The former proved victorious after a stoutly - fought contest. On Priday evening there will be an exhibition of fancy skating by Mr Greenwood. A Calumny Eefuted. — At the luncheon at Messrs Wood Bros/ mill yesterday, Mr Oliver, an Australian miller of long experience, said that he was very pleased to be abla to refute the statement that New Zealand wheat would not germinate in Australia. In 1876, he said, when in the Wimmera district, he sowed 1000 bushels of New Zealand wheat, with the result that the crop yielded 22 bushels to the acre, against 13 bushels per acre, the ' average yield of wheat grown from tho local seed. Imperial Institute. — Sir Somers Vine, who is visiting New Zealand on business connected with the Imperial Institute, arrived in Christchurch by the Dunedin express last night, and is Btaying at Coker's Hotel. His visit to Ghristchurch will be short this time, as he proceeds to Wellington by the Waihora to-day. Twa 'Oohs 'mang Oor Ain Fowk. — The Scottish Eifles have arranged to give their fifth annual Scotch concert at the Oddfellows' Hall on an early day in June, j The programme, iu which some of our best singers and performers of Scotch tonga and j music will appear, is calculated to keep up j the reputation of the corps for good taste and popularity. Details of the programme will be published in due time. Somner. — An entertainment was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening, in aid of the funds of the local Lawn. Tennis Club. Songs were given by Misses Freeman, England, and B. Duckworth, Messrs Freeman and Allan, and the Eev C. J. Merton, also readings by Messrs England, Stevens, and E. Salter. Mr E. Salter had kindly arranged for the concert, and a special vote of thanks was passed to him for the very pleasant evening's amusement he had provided.
