Too Late, Alas !
— « A case in which a man had been sentenced for a couple of minor offeaces had been disposed of in the Police Court this morning, by the imposing of what was generally thought a sufficient penalty, when the informant, who waß also one of the principal witnesses in the case, asked (with a total disregard in his phraseology to the claims of the "h — aspirate") to be allowed to remark to tho Bench on the leniency of the sentence. The senior Magistrate courteously told him that he had given his evidence and they had made their decision, and wished to hear no more about the matter. The complainant then appealed to the reporters present to take cognizance of the affair, and failing to draw anything more severe from the Bench than another appeal to be relieved of his too immediate presence, he departed down the aisle of the Provincial Council Chambers with a deportment that would not have disgraced the Prince of Wales, and the crushing remark that " Hit was about time all 'spectablo people left thi3 'ere place."
