Death by Drowning. — A female child of Mr "William Beattie, two years of age, was drowned at Methven this morning through falling into a well. Pkotection League. — A meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Industrial Protection League of New Zealand was held last evening. After some routine business had been transacted, Mr Eden George addressed the meeting, and asked their support in his candidature for the seat rendered vacant by the resignation of Sir Julius Yogel. The matter was left in abeyance till after the issue of the writ for Christchurch North. Tai Tapu Dairy Factory. — A meeting of the Directors was held in the Library on May 2, at 7.30 p.m.; present — Messrs Rainey (Chairman), Herrick, Mangels, Spencer, Champion, Leathern and Forbes. The Chairman brought forward the question of elevating gear for the Victoria Separator, and it was agreed that the Chairman make enquiries from Mr Eeece, and report at next meeting. The Secretary was requested to write to the Secretary of the Sei'fcon Dairy Company re sample tin. The Treasurer reported having received .£l4O 10s from the Secretary during the month, being on account of calls now due. It waa agreed that the Secretary should give notice of the first call -on all shares on which a call has not yet been made. The Secretary was also instructed to write to the Auckland Dairy Association for information us to the description of boxes and most suitable wood for the same. After transacting some routine business, and passing a small account, the meeting adjourned. Ootjrt Star qv Canterbury, A.O.F. — The monthly meeting of the above Court was held on Monday evening, at the Foresters' Hall, Oxford terrace. The chair was occupied by the C.E. Bro J. R. Davidson, supported by Bro Weakley, P.C.E., Bro C. Samuels, P.D.C.E., Bro Bruce, S.C.R., and all the officers, but the general attendance was by no means large. Correspondence was read from Nelson, Melbourne, Napier, Jcc, dealing with various matters, and the report of the quarterly district meeting was read and adopted. Dr G. H. Deamer (who, in concert with his brother, Dr G. Deamer, is acting as medical officer to the Court), was initiated into the Order, and was very heartily received. In a few well-chosen words he expressed his intention of exercising the same diligence with regard to the Court as the late Dr Deamer. In reply to a request from Court Dunsandel, it was decided to forward bannerettes, &c, for a coming demonstration at that place. Some discussion took place re the difficulties of correspondence with sick members, and it was decided to notify them to address all correspondence to the hall. At a subsequent meeting of the Management Committee, an application for a loan of <£500 was considered and approved, and the meeting terminated. The late Emperor Maximilian, of Mexico, would have been the next heir to the Austrian throne had he lived. Ho was the next brother to Emperor Francis Joseph. Archduke Otto, who is now the direct heir after his father, Archduke Charles Louis, will be twenty-four years of age next April. One of the titles of the Einperorof Austria is " King of Jerusalem." It is needless to add that Francis Josephhas no dominion whatever over the Holy City. A
