At the opening of the Koyal Academy to-day, the Marquis of Salisbury announced that an anonymous donor had offered to erect a new national portrait gallery on the site offered by Government near Trafalgar square, where the former institution stood. It is rumoured that the Right Hon W. H. Smith, leader of the House of Commons, is the donor referred to. Banking in Australia. The floating of tho new Australian Bank has been abandoned, owing to an impression that banking is overdone in the Colonies, and a fear that a new venture might ombark in risky business, in order to be in a position to declare speedy dividends. Troops Quitting Ireland. Six thousand troops now quartered in Ireland will shortly return to England. CONSTANTINOPLE, Mat 7. More Outrages by Kurds. The Kurdish chief Mussa Bey escaped from an Armenian prison and assembled a gang of his followers and made a raid on the residences of nobles, the occupants of which he seized. Petroleum was poured over them, and then they were burned to death.
