The Midland Railway.

The smart rejoinder of Monday, when the detractors o£ the Midland Railway Com- ; pany woro told that the Springfield sur- , veya were to be begun, was followed by the crushing retort of yesterday, when we [ learned that the money for the great , enterprise bad been obtained. Good news has been followed by better. The many congratulations that went about as the j news became known, were sure sigDß of I public feeling on the matter. That feelj ing was pardonable. The news was good for the Company and their work : it showed the first to be possessed of a strong, sound position in the opinion of the Home financiers ; it showed the second to be within our view, as it were, in it 3 f ull completed state. It is good news for Canterbury and for Weatland, for it augurs business and employment for the one, development and progress for the other. The labourer, the settler, the merchant, the miner, the capitalist— rail have their interest, great or little, in the news. It ia good news for the Colony at large> for it shows its credit to be high, and that investment here on a large scale, in spite of all that the enemy has said and done, is looked upon by the English capitalist as R,iFf> In short it ia erood news all round.
