Akaroa County Council.

The above Council held its ordinary monthly meeting on Saturday; present— Messrs James Hay (Chairman), Orton Bradley, H. D. Buchanan, T. S. Baker, W. Birdling and W. T. Masefield.

chaibuan's statement.

The Chairman said that since last meeting the Treasurer had banked J8325 19s sd, received for rates and from other sources, and had .£196 cash in hand that morning; the debit balance at the Bank stood to-day at £291 14s 6d. TheCharitable Aid Board have advised the Council that they have paid all the expenses in the matter of Munday's funeral. The necessary petition for a loan for a new ■wharf for Wainui was now in process of i being signed by the inhabitants of the special rating district defined for the purpose. The Charitable Aid Board wrote for £85 11s 6d, balance of contribution due by the Council, but the payment would have to stand over until next meeting. The usual statement of accounts had been furnished by the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and was laid upon the table. A letter from, the Little Eiver Boad Board requested the Council to undertake a short piece of formation joining a new road the Board had formed at the Maori Reserve to the Main road. The surveys for the Summit road diversions were finished, bnt tracings would be needed, as exchanges of portions of old road for new would be made under the Public Works Act. The Engineer had suggested closing a part of the old Ridge road at Duvauchelle's Peak, and he (the Chairman) had visited the place in question andfullyconcurredin the suggestion^ the road wasnowhardlyused, and wasaharbour for cattle which trespassed upon the new road and destroyed the banks and water tables. He had seen several of the proprietors of land in the neighbourhood, and thought that they would offer no objection and would purchaeejush portions aa abutted upon their variottsf properties. In company with the Engineer he had visited the quarries from whence tenderers proposed to supply metal for the Little Eiver hUI, and bad entered into certain arrangements with three of the tenderers which he would ask the Council to confirm. FOBWATION AT IiITTIjB BIVBB. It was resolved to comply with the* request. of the Little Eiver Boad Board, and make the formation required to join the Board's road to the Main road. DIVEESION SUMMIT BOAD AT EESEEVH 1220. The Chairman said Mr Hunt, the lessee of Educational Beserve 1220, required the sum of <£7 per annum for twelve years as compensation for severance of his lease* hold by the proposed diversion through it. The northern part contained no water, so that he would have to water cattle pasturing upon that portion daily. He was. willing to submit his offer to arbitration. Mr Masefield considered the offer a. reasonable one, and after some discussion^ it was resolved to close with Mr Hunt. METAL CONTRACTS. The Engineer explained the details of the proposed arrangements for purchase- of metal for Little Biver Hill, and the Chairman's action was approved of and confirmed. CLOSING OLD RIDGE BOAD, DTTVATJCHEIiLE's PBAK. It was reßolved to take steps to-close this road from the Little Akaloa saddle-to the junction of the Fern-glen road, as suggested by the Chairman. BRIDGE AT PORT VICTORIA. Mr Bradley moved — "That the Council erect a new bridge near the parsonage, Port Victoria." He said hisdistricfe had not received its sbareof County expenditure, and that this bridge, which was- of 32ft span, and an absolute necessity, offered the Council an opportunity of doing an act. of justice. The Public Works Acfeempowered them to construct bridges of 30ft span and over on any road in- the County. . . Mr Masefield said he thought the Port Victoria district was not illused. The part of the Akaroa and Wainui district in which he resided was as large as the whole of the Port Victoria district, and hardly had any roads. He would vote, however, for a subsidy towards the bridge if the latter district really suffered under an injustice. Some time ago Mr Bradley had given notice that he would move that, the Council take over the' Port VictoriaMain road to Lyttelton, but had withdrawn it. It was inconsistent now to ask, the Council to build abridge on -the same* road. Mr Baker, while concurring with Mr Masefield'a latter remarks, deprecated the discussion. He thought the Council-should ■ take a broad view of these matters, and where work was for the general good of the County the Council should undertake it. After a long discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Masefield, seconded by Mr Buchanan—^" That the Clerk present a full statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Port Viotoria Biding at next meeting, when the Council could., better consider Mr Bradley's motion." ' - ACCOtTNTS. Accounts amounting to MS 18s 4d were passed for payment, and after considering the present arrangements with the County Clerk and the Engineer, which it was resolved to adhere to, and the transaction of routine business, the Council adjourned.

Up to the end of the last century,, streetsweeping was not adopted in Paris. After an excessive fall of rain, and a more than ordinary accumulation of mod, small temporary wooden bridges were established at the worst crossings. These bridges were on wheels, were light enough to be pushed by a couple of men, and were. ' removed as soon as there was no farther? 1 need of them.
