The Lincoln Election.

ME SAUNDEES AT BUENHAM. Mr Saunders addressed the electors here last night in the Bchoolroom, but there was a very poor attendance. Mr Woodfield was voted to the chair, and in a few words introduced the candidate.' Mr Satjndebs. began by comparing the costs of the different Administrations since 1840, and gave several examples of the extravagances of late Governments, one being — " There are mere copying clerks in Wellington, who are getting 1 .£350 a-year, at the present time, when the purchasing power of money has doubled." In condemning the policy of Sir Julius Yogel, he made the astonishing statement that some nineteen and a half millions had been borrowed and £17,100,000 paid in interest alone in eleven years — seventeen millions that might have been used in employing our people here instead of being sent away from the country. After touching on other topics, and defending himself from the charge of being a "useless politician," he explained the Hare system of voting, but said it was not likely to be considered by the present House, under Sir H. Atkinson. In answer to questions, Mr Saunders said he was not in favour of the abolition of Boards of Education, which were economical institutions on the whole. The only piece of extravagence on the part of his Board was in having three Inspectors when two were quite able to do the work. ;He was also opposed to the removal of Inspectors from one district to another. j He was, however, in favour of paying teachers according to the " working average " instead of as at present. After a vote of confidence had been carried the meeting broke up.
