CHBISTCHUECH. This Day. (Before Caleb Whitefoord, Esq., E.M., and E. Wesfcenra and H. J. Hall, Esqs.) Attempted Suicide. — Eichard Savage was^ charged with attempting to commit suicide by throwing himself into the river ' Halsnell on the previous day. Accused's son said he had been drinking heavily lately, and there had-been a row between accused and bis mother. They came into | the house, and Savage then cleared out, and some boys afterwards told him that he had jumped into the river off the bridge. Accused was remanded till Monday for medical treatment. The Bicycle NnisAsrcs:. — Frederick P. Smith was fined 5s for riding his bicycle-on the footpath of River road, Linwood. Assault. — William Benson, a boy about fourteen years old, was charged with assaulting Eichard Sheppard, at Staik'e road, Spreydon. Evidence was led show- • ing that Sheppard was driving some fowls 1 belonging to defendant's mother off his ■ garden, and threw stoneß at them for that 1 purpose. The boy then threw a clod, > which struck the old man in the ' eye. The Bench were of opinion that « a good flogging would do the accused 1 good, and cure him of the objectionable • habit of throwing things at people. J He would have to pay Court coats, 7s. Louise Schmenski (Mr Joyce) was charged with assaulting Katrine Gerßchawßki, represented by Mr Eussell. Matthew j Schmenski (Mr Loughrey) was charged with assaulting Michael Gerschawski. Mr Euaßell appeared for Gerschawski. The assaults both took place at the Wellington Hotel on Saturday, Nov. 10. Mis Gerachawski said Mrs Schmenski called her bad names, and followed this up by l poking her in the face with an umbrella, I and also by scratching her. Defendantthen i again came ont of a small room and struck , -her several times with the umbrella. - Fuchs, the landlord of the hotel, Baid that ) all the parties had been drinking together. > It was not a friendly spar, as one of , the witnesses tried to make out. After this ! row Schmenski came to the hotel and , repeatedly challenged Gorschawski to > fight, pointing to himand saying *' That's
the ," and finally caught him by the coat and tried to pull him out of the hotel. They got outside and then a fight took place. Defendant said that complainant addressed very offensive I epithets to him. The male accused was fined 10s, and the female accused 203, each side to pay its own costs. Failing to Obkt an Order. — William Willis was charged by his wife Jane Willis with failing to obey an orderof the Court made on August 8, 1888, to pay Is 6d per week in support of each of his eight children. Complainant said that it was through drink that her husband failed to keep a situation when he got. one. He replied that thiß was not so, and that he had had only one week's work since August last. The B.nch adjourned the case for fourteen days, enquiries to be made as to the truth of his statement.
