COUNTRY HEWS.
Cbicket. — A match between tlie Courtenay and Waddington clubs was played at the ground of the former on Saturday, and resulted in a hard-earned victory for the home team. Time only admitted of one innings each, and the respective scores were : Courtenay, 159 ; Waddington, 101. ! The principal scorers for the visitors were : W. Armstrong 25, J. Hislop 21, E. Wilson 19, J. Baird 16 j and for the victors, A. Simpson 53, T. Fairbairn 28, J. Belgrave 25, and C. Dickson 20. The bowling on either side "was for the most part rather loose. To Mr Arthur Simpson belongs the i honour of turning into a substantial win for the Courtenay team what at one time appeared certain defeat. Bboadfield Sjpobts. — A meeting of those interested in these sports was held in the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Saturday evening, Mr Dunnet in the chair. There was a large attendance. Mr M. J. Brown, the Hon Secretary, read the financial report, which showed a credit-balance of 16s Bd. It was agreed that the sports be held between Christmas and New 1 ear's Day, the day to be fixed at a future meeting. The following were elected a Working Committee, with power to add to their number : — Messrs A. Dunnet, P. Eyan, M. F. Byan, M. J. Brown, T. Hartigan, J. Connelly, J. O'Neill, G. Cunneen, E. O'Eorke, W. Comerf ord, A. ! Lyon, E. Thompson, P. Brown and J. M'Veigh. . The Secretary was instructed ; to write to Mr A. P. O'Callaghan, M.H.E., asking him to again act as patron. Mr M. F. Eyan was re-elected Hon Treasurer, and Mr M. J. Brown Hon Secretary. The Secretary was instructed to prepare subscription lists, and distribute them amongst the members. The meeting was then adjourned till Saturday, Nov. 10. Sotjthbbidge.— On Wednesday last the temperance service of nong, entitled "Little Tiz," was given in aid of the funds of the Union Band of Hope. The various pieces were rendered very nicely by an efficient choir, under the baton of Mr John Campbell, the connective readings being given by the Eev W. West. On the motion, of the Eev Mr Eiddle, of Eakaia, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performers. The attendance was not large, but the proceeds will go a long way towards liquidating the debt at present existing. — A general meeting of the Ellesmere Caledonian Society was held on Saturday evening, Mr J. E. Campbell in the chair. Mr J. Low wrote, resigning his position as Secretary, as he had not sufficient time at his disposal to carry out the duties. On the motion of Mr Murdoch, seconded by Mr J. Cowan, Mr Low's resignation was accepted with regret, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to him for his past services. Mr M'Kay wrote, offering his services as piper for the coming concert. Mr C. H. Willis was duly elected Secretary for the ensuing term. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr W. Graham re use of his paddock for coming sports, and also to the Eailway Department re alteration in timetable on day of Bporfcs. The following were appointed a Sports Committee: — Messrs A.' Low, J. Morrison, W. T. Little, G. Tevendale. J. M'Gregor, D. Gilmour, J. Cowan, A. Webster, and J. Eobb. After transacting some other business in connection with the sports, the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
