STRIKES.

THE ENGLISH COAL MINEES. [Special to Phess Association.] LONDON, 0ct.. 20. A. largely-attended meeting of colliery owners was held to-day, when a resolution was passed regretting that they were unable to grant an advance of wages. They also agreed that the Mayor of Sheffield, aloDg with representatives chosen by the miners could inspect their books, in order to prove that they were not in a position to pay a higher rate of wage. Considerable alarm is felt in the metropolis, in consequence of the strike extending throughout the country. The stock of coal at present in London will probably last a fortnight ; but should the strike become general, much inconvenience and distress will be experienced.
