THE MARQUESAS.
LOHDON, Skpt. 21. | A telegram has been received from ; San Francisco, stating that the French flag has been hoisted on the Marquesas group. : [The Marquesas are situated North-east of the Low Archipelago, and about 900 miles from Tahiti. . They consist of j seventeen islands, twelve of which have been carefully explored. All are of volcanic origin. The total area is estimated at 500 square miles, and the popution at 5000. Generally speaking, the soil is less fertile than Tahiti. The climate | is fairly good. The aborigines are regarded as the finest of all the South Sea islanders. One of the group, Nukuhiwa, was formerly a French, penal settlement, and at the port of Taiohai a French Commissioner resides, several commercial . houses being established there.] THE LATE EMPEEOE FREDERICK'S DIARY. Extracts from the late Emperor Frederick's diary have been published in Berlin. From these extracts it is shown that he initiated the project of the federation of the German States against the opposition of his father and Prince Bismarck.
