Temperance Alliance.

ifr T. W. Glover, organising agent of the New Zealand Alliance for the Suppression of the Liquor Traffic, addressed a meeting numbering over two hundred, at the Literary Institute Hall, Rangiora, on j Friday night. The Yen Archdeacon Dudley | presided. The speaker, in an address occupying nearly two hours, fully explained the objects of the Alliance, one of its ' principal aim 3 being to obtain for the people the right of deciding the prohibition question, without compensation to the publican, by a direct vote at the ballot. He stated that nine-tenths of the members of the present Parliament were pledged to the Alliance to support a measure giving the people the power to decide the prohibition question; but the rock on which they split was compensation, only twentyfourof the members— but still an encouraging number — being in favour o£ closing public-houses without compensation. At the close of the address a number of those present joined the Alliance, Special hymns were sung during the evening by a choir under Mr Cuinberworth, Miss Gray accompanying on the organ. Before the meeting dispersed votes of thanks were accorded to the lecturer, choir and Chairman. At half-past six the same evening 1 , Mr Glover, as Qrand Worthy Chief Templar of New Zealand, attended a special session of tie Good Intent Lodge of Templars, and explained points in the working of the Order under the amalgamated English and American Constitutions. There was a good attendance of members, and the Chief received a hearty welcome.
