LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Thubbdat, August 2. The Speaker took his seat at 2.30 p.m. BEPOBTB ON PETITIONS. The Public Petitions Committee repotted on tho petitions praying for tho repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act, and that tho Education system of tho Colony be maintained intact. The Committee reported thai; they had no recommendation to make in either case. CONTRACTS AND rROIIISES BILL. The Contracts and Promises Bill waa read a third time and passed. EVENING BITTING. MINING ACT AMENDMENT. On resuming at 7.80 p.m. The Mining Act, 1886, Amendment Act •was farther considered in Committee. A long debate took place over Clause 1, relating to compensation. Ultimately it was passed after being amended by the excision of " claim 3 not exceeding 50 per cent." After Clause 8 had "been agreed to, The Hon S. E. Shbimski moved— "That progress be reported, with leave to sib again," intimating thab the Bill would never fret through, during the night. The Cotmcil divided — Ayes 9, Noea 11. After passing Clause 11, progress was reported, with- leave to sit again. MAHBIBD WOMKN'B PBOPERTI. The AttAbnbt - General moved tho second reading of the Married Women's Property Extension Bill. The Han J. N. Wilson opposed tho Bill, Baying it waa a most objectionable one, as it gave,ttnarried women too much power. The Hon S. E. Shbimski drew the .Speaker's attention to the state of the Council, there being no quorum. The Council rose afc 10.40 till to-morrow.
