Liability of Married Women.

Amongst the business before Mr Beetham at the Lyttelton E.M. Court, yesterday, was an application on behalf of W. Hildyard, bootmaker, for a judgment summons against Mrs Matthews. It appears that the creditor obtained judgment for the amount, some £13, a Bhorb time ago, and now applied for an order requesting the money to be paid -within a Btated time. Before going on with the case, Mr Bussellj who was appearing for the debtor, said he would point out that the Court had no jurisdiction to make an order against a married woman. His client was a married woman, and it would only be wasting the time of the Court to go on with the case. In support of his contention, Mr Eussell quoted late Law Beports, from which it appeared that no order could be made unless it -was clearly proved that the debtor was possessed of an estate to the value of .£IOOO or upwards. Mr Beetham said the matter was beyond argument, and the order must in consequence be refused. This information may be of interest to tradespeople and others, Moral : Deal with the husband.
