Striking off Cape Palliser.

♦ A NARROW ESCAPE. [PIIB PbeSS AfIBOOIATION.J WELLINGTON, Mat 18. The Bteamer Wainui, which arrived yesterday from Fiji, had a narrow escape off Cape Palliser. She was abreast of the point on Wednesday evening, and,, owing to the foggy weather^the-taoraof^heJand

was scarcely visible. Captain Cromarty and the chief officer were on the bridge, and the captain, observing breakers ; ahead, gave the order " full speed astern." This was promptly obeyed, but, notwithstanding, the vessel ran on a projecting rock. She had no speed on, however, when she ran on the rocks, and came off again by her own weight about five minutes afterwards. When she went on she bumped distinctly on the forward ballast tank, and a little water was made. After the accident the vessel came on to Wellington, and an idea of the density- of the fog may be gained when it is mentioned that it took her over twenty hours to reach here. She will be taken up on to the slip and examined.
