ANGLO-COLONIAL FOOTBALL.

♦ .- THE NEW PLYMOUTH MATCH. As announced in the Star "Extra" last night, the English team met with their first reverse at New Plymouth. This will doubtless surprise many people who are unaware that from the country districts around Mount Egmont — from New Plymouth itself, fromHawera, from Patea, and other places— a very strong team can be got together. The English team, tno, had juet played a couple of severe matches at Wellington, and were forced to go to the ground almost direct from the steamer. The game appears to have been stubbornly contested, neither side scoring a point during the first spell, although tha Press Association report says the play waa very fast. At the same time it would appear that the Taranaki men were occasionally hard pressed, and had to defend themselves very vigorously. Half-way through the second spell Taranaki gained the coveted try, A. Bayley and H. Good doing the trick betreen them. The try was fruitless, and the only point scored, for though a try was claimed by tbe visitors a few moments before time was called, the Referee disallowed it. Taranaki) therefore, earn 6 the distinction of having beaten the Englishmen by one point to nil.
