French Annexation in the Pacific.
*■ A FATAL MISUNDERSTANDING. [Pee Pkess Association.] AUCKLAND, Mat 15. The Eichmond, which has arrived from Fiji, brings intelligence that the Islands of Borabora, Huakine, and Ksiatea, in the Society group, vrere formally annexed by the French Government on April 17, 18, and 21 respectively. No combined resistance was made by the Natives, but whilst the French warship Decrca was at Huahine a misunderstanding occurred which, resulted in the death of Lieutenant Denot, and the wounding of several eeauien. A watering party had been sent ashore in charge of Lieutenant Denot, and a shot wa3 fired from the ship as a signal for the men to return, but this was mistaken by the Natives as a signal for the commencement of hostilities, and they fired, upon the patty with the result; stated. The matter was afterwards explained, and the Native Chief next day went on board the Decres and made signs of submission, expressing regret at the unfortunate, mistake and it 3 consequence. It is stated that the Natives in the three islands ' are agreeable to the French occupation. .
