A watering party had been sent ashore in charge of Lieutenant Denot, and a shot wa3 fired from the ship as a signal for the men to return, but this was mistaken by the Natives as a signal for the commencement of hostilities, and they fired, upon the patty with the result; stated. The matter was afterwards explained, and the Native Chief next day went on board the Decres and made signs of submission, expressing regret at the unfortunate, mistake and it 3 consequence. It is stated that the Natives in the three islands ' are agreeable to the French occupation. .
