Band of Hope. — The Trinity Congregational Total Abstinence Society and Band I of Hope's fortnightly meeting was held last Monday, Mr Sillifant in the chair. The programme consisted of addresses by Mr Light and the Chairman, a pianoforte solo by Mm Marshall, songs by Misa j Shrop, Miss N. Adams, and Mr E. P. Owen, and a recitation by the Chairman. Names were taken for the recitation competition on Monday, May 28. Philmpstown. — The parishioners of Phillipstown propose holding a fancy fair in the Oddfellows' Hall, East belt, on the Queen's Birthday. Active preparations have been going on for months past by a large number of ladies, who purpose attending the fair in fancy dress. The ■ amusements, as will be seen by advertisement, are of a varied description, suited to old and young, and at the same time there will be goods of a useful kind for sale. Light Weights. — At the Lyttelton Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, a number .of shopkeepers were charged with having in their possession weights which were not up to the' standard. It was pointed out by the parties that they were put to great inconvenience by there being: no place at the Port where the weights could be tested. The Inspector only visited the place about every fifteen month a. The Justices suggested that a requisition should be got up, asking the Inspector to visit the town at least every but months. TJ.A..OD. — The Committee connected with the formation of the new Lodge at Linwood are at last in a position to state that the opening of a Lodge in their district will soon be an accomplished fact. At the meeting held last evening the list of intending candidates was considerably increased, and the number now reaches thirty financial and two honorary members. A final public meeting is to be held at the Oddfellows' Hall, East belt, on Thursday evening next, when the necessary arrangements will be made for obtaining the dispensation for the new Lodge. A number of P.D.P.'s and others will address the meeting, and all those wishing to become members are requested to attend. AVONSIDE LITEBABT ASSOCIATION. — The nsual weekly meeting of tbe Avonside Literary Association was held yesterday evening, in the Avonside schoolroom. The subject for the evening was an essay on "Football," by Mr Gibson, who treated the subject historically, and showed that even in the ■*' Homeric Age " the Greeks indulged in football, but with a much less cumbersome code of rules than those now in use. By them the game was taught to the Romans, who in their turn introduced it into England. The game flourished amongst the Saxons, until it is now the national winter game of Great Britain. He then proceeded to detail the progress of sport and! athletics in the Colonies, and gave the causes which produced the present visit of the English football team, enunciating during the essay the benefits which New Zealand footballers should derive from the visit. The debate was ably carried on by Meßsra Ward, Plunkett (2), A. Hobbs, Jzett (2), and Davis. The Chairman briefly summed up the debate.and stated that, from the opinions expressed, it was manifest that theanembers were strong partisans of football. At tho close of the debate votes of thanks were passed to Mr Gibson, to the ladies who had courageously faced the inclement weather to attend the meeting, to the debaters, and the chair. The meeting then adjourned till Tuesday next, when the " Portfolio " will be opened.
