THE FIRE AT AN OPORTO THEATRE.
9 A Horrible Disaster. Knives Used. [bz bleotrlo tslxbraph- copiribbt} [Special to Pbess Association.] [Beceived Maroh 24, at 11.20 a.m."] LISBON, Maboh 23. Particulars of the fire at the Oporto Theatre show that the outbreak originated through an explosion of gas in the last act of the piece that was being performed. The doors from the upper boxes and the gallery became blocked by the rush of men, who drew their knives and fought for egress. Some of those who escaped had their clothes completely torn off, and were covered with wounds. About twenty persons were trampled to death in the stampede. Several were killed by jumping from the windows, and seventy were suffocated and their calcined bodies afterwards found in the debris. The actors engaged in the performance escaped in their costumes.
