[BnouL to Paras Association,] MONETABY. LONDON, Mabch 12. Colonial stocks are inflated. New South Wales 3 per cents are at £106, and fours at <£114. Yictonan fours are at £113. POSTAL MATTERS. Mr Henniker Heaton, in Ms paper read at the Colonial Institute, declared that the postal loss on a penny sea route would be within .£15,000, without allowing for the increase of letters. If such a. proposal were adopted, he advocates a reduction of the Continental charges to a halfpenny, and said that the Colonial Conference had not uttered a word of sound criticism on his proposals. He denounced the oppressive cable monopoly, and advocated the Imperial and Colonial purchase <■ of the Eastern Extension Company's lines, and the construction of a Pacific cable, thus enabling the establishment of a shilling tariff. THE AUSTEALIAN SQUADRON. H.M.S. Stork sails on March 14, to join the Australian station. A UNIFORM POSTAGKE STAMP. Mr Cecil Raikes, PostmasterGeneral, in reply to an enquiry, stated that a uniform postage stamp for Great Britain and the Colonies was not practicable. THE TARIFF CONFERENCE. Sir Graham Berry, Sir F. D. Bell, and Sir J. F. Garrick leave for Brussels on Wednesday to attend the Tariff Conference. THE SOUDAN CONTINGENT. The stars presented by the Khedive to the Soudan contingent in recognition of their services in the late war, have been shipped by the steamer Oroya for Sydney. DULL TRADE. The shipbuilding trade is dull, and several failures are probable. THE FRENCH IN THE PACIFIC. In the House of Commons, in reply to a question from Mr W. J. Johnston. M.P. for Belfast, Sir J". Fergusson, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, promised to produce the papers relating to the cession of Raiatea to France. SEVERE GALES, AND LOSS OF LIFE. Severe gales have been experienced in the English Channel, and several of the Boulogne steamers narrowly escaped being wrecked near Folkestone. Telegraphic communication with the Continent is interrupted. Three of the Brixton life-boat crew wexe drowned in going off to the wreck of a Vessel named the Syria. j THE ROYAL SILVER WEDDING. The principal buildings in the City | were illuminated in honour of the Prince of Wales' silver wedding. A SOCIETY SCANDAL. Majcr Borrows has been fined .£4OO for assaulting Lord De Walden. The affair arose out of a society scandal. THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION PABIS. Mabch 12. The French exhibits at the Melbourne Exhibition will occupy 70,000 feet. A large number of pictures will be sent. PABT3. March 13. M. Bergen, Director of the Exposition to be held here next year, has persuaded 243 French exhibitors to apply for 64,000 ft at the Melbourne Exhibition.
