Cycling. — The sports meeting of the Timaru Bicycle Club comes off on Thursday next, and it is hoped that a number of Christchurch riders -will visit their Southern comrades on the occasion. Australian Mail. — Notwithstanding the late arrival of the Waihora at the Bluff yesterday, the Australian mail will reach Christchurch by to-night's express, and will be delivered at the usual time. The Hon Minister of Lands. — The Hon Q. F. Richardson visited the Immigration and Lands Offices this morning, and also was present at the trial of "Wolseiey'a sheep shearing machine, in the. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Association's stores. Personal.— Mr M. Murphy, the Secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pa&toral Association, returned to-day from his holiday trip to Australia. He kept holiday by visiting the Centennial Show, and inspecting various Agricultural and Industrial Institutions in New South Wales and 'Victoria. Sib Julius Yogel. — Sir Julius Yogel arrived from Wellington by the Wairarapa this morning, and is staying at Warner's Commercial Hotel. He will remain here for a few days, and then visits Dunedin, whence he •will return to Christchurch. Sir Julius will probably at an early date leave the Colony on a trip to the Old Country. Grocers' Picnic. — The grocers held their annual picnic to-day at Halswell, where Mr Candy's paddpck had been kindly pla:ed at their disposal. A proceseion of about a score of vehicles was formed in Cathedral square about 9 a.m., and after pac3ir>g through the town, headed by the Sydenham Band, went to the scene of the outing, where the holiday- ! makers enjoyed themselves with races and ' Bporta for old and young. ( Athletics. — Mr Drcyer is ■ bringing down from Wellington a troupe of athletes, which includes boxers and club-swingers. All who enjoy witnessing, or taking part in, a good bout with the gloves have a treat in store for tbem, as the leading J lights amoßgst the boxers are P. !\ Slavin, ! who is rrg.irded by many as the champion ! of Australia, owing to his challenge to the j hoJ-er, Jackson, not being accepted, and J. Hall, champion light-weight of this Colony, a title he gained by his recent victory over the plucky and hard-hitting . William Murphy. The opening performance will take place at the Theatre Royal, on Feb. 17,-tnd we might mention that Mr ( Dwyer intends giving a five guinea cup to be competed foe by amateurs, the ' Ecoring to bo by points. j
Auction Sai>ss. — Auction sale/j of salvage goods ex May Queen, and of household furniture, &c, are announced uv this issue by Mr Ayers. Bltjs Ribbon Mission. — Ac the Blue Ribbon Hall, on Monday ev/jnlng last, the Temperance story "The Lifecle Captain," was rendered by a choiv of some fifty Band of Hope children., the Rev J. G. W. Ellis presiding. The a'jor.y was read with much feeling by Mr H. Olney, and the musical illustrations -conducted by Mr G. H. Pye, who was supported by Messrs H. Pillow (accomparoat), M'Creedy and Walker (violins). There was a good attendance.
