ST ALBANS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Ail ordinary meeting of this Council was held at the Council's offices last evening, at 7.30 ; present—The Mayor (Chairman), Councillors Heard, Penteney, Smith, Neate, "Waymouth, Salter, and Meares. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Garnett, on the motion of Councillor Smith. Councillor Neate said that the residents of Grafton road were willing to collect the money for the bridge, if the Council would erect it. A petition from residents in Berry street, asking for a lamp to be erected at the corner of the street, was referred to the Lighting Committee. Councillor Neate said that, owing to the holiday, the Finance Committee were not prepared to present the usual report, but they would present JEIOO 3s 5d 'worth of accounts to be passed for payment. These accounts were passed. Councillor Slater reported for the "Works j Committee that owing to the holidays the i work oil the river bank had been deferred. The report was approved. Councillor Smith reported for the Lighting Committee that the lamp at Merivale lane required to be renewed. It was decided to erect a gas-lamp there. The Wookton Town Board wrote that they would consider the request of the St Albans Board to co-operate in getting a portion of the licenses and fees collected in the city. Similar communications were received from Linwood, Sydenham, and Sumner Boards. A Government circular on the subject of the election of two representatives for the Charitable Aid Board was read. The Mayor and Councillor Moore were elected to represent the Borough on the Board. It was decided to write to the member for St Albans, asking him to support the new Auctioneers Act, to enable the Council to participate in auctioneers' license fees. The report on means of egress from public buildings in St Albans in case of fire was read, and it was decided to recommend that certain small alterations be carried out. A report by the Town Clerk on the engagements of employees under the Council was laid on the table. The Town Clerk reported that the sum of J2lB had been promised towards water- | ing Papanui road, but that some residents j had refused to contribute, stating that the j work as carried out previously was practi- I cally useless. Councillor Meares moved — "That the j sum of JS4O votsd for watering Papanui road be expended at once, and that any sum which might be collected be added to that sum." The motion was carried. Councillor Waymouth moved, and Councillor Neate seconded—" That Councillors Neate and Moore, the Mayor, and the mover be a Committee to consider the return of employees under the Council, with the view of seeing if any economy could be effected." The motion was carried. Councillor Penteney moved-"-" That the Government be requested to allow some of the unemployed to form the road leading from the North Belt to Edgeware road, known as Packe's road, the same being a Government road." Carried. Moved by Councillor Smith, seconded by Councillor Meares — "That a return of water in the Borough available for fire prevention purposes be provided by the Town Clerk." This was altered to a notice of motion by Councillor Smith, who also gave notice of motion — "That a Fire Inspector should be appointed for the Borough." ! Some routine business having been disposed of, the mesting adjourned.
