INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.
An ordinary meeting of the Committee of the Industrial Association was held yesterday evening. Present —Messrs E. Toomer (in the Chair), H. B. Kirk, E. H. Banks, J. L. 4 Scott, T. Danks, H. J. Shaw, A. G. Howland, E. Ford, L. Adams, and J. Glanville. Apologies for absence were received from several members. Messrs E. C. Brown and M. Sandstein were elected members of the Committee. A letter was read from Mr A. E. Peache, Mount Somers, asking the assistance of Association in obtaining a reduction of the rate, per ton, for the carriage of lime on the railway from Mount Somers to Christchurch. He drew attention to the difference between the charge for carriage from Milburn, Otago, to Christchurch, and from Mount Somers to Christchurch, and stated that a reduction of the latter to lid per ton per mile (which was half as much again as tho rate from Milburn) would enable him to build lime-kilns at once, and reduce the present price cf lime in Christchurch by at least 35 per cent. On the motion of Mr l Danks, seconded by Mr Kirk, it was decided to refer the letter and the whole question of the railway tariff to a special Committee, to be appointed after the Customs Tariff Committee had completed its work. Mr Toomer here left the room, having to attend to another engagement, and Mr Howland was voted to the Chair. Mr E. H. Banks moved, pursuant to notice —" That it be a recommendation to a general meeting of the Association, that the financial year begin on Jan. 1 and ter minate on Dec. 31." Mr Glanville seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Danks, it was resolved —"That the annual conversazione be held in future towards the close of each financial year, but that the next conversazione be held in February or March of next year if possible." Several copies of the prospectus of the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of 1888 were received from the Colonial Secretary's Office. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge them, and to ask what steps Government intend to take in the matter. It was decided to call a special gezieral meeting of the Association on Wednesday next, when Mr Danks will read a paper on " The economy of fuel in relation to small steam-engines." The President and Mr Banks were empowered to make the alterations in the rules necessary for carrying out the resolution re the financial year, and to report to the next general meeting. This concluded the business.
