POLITICAL GOSSIP.

— «. — THE UNEMPLOYED QUESTION. Further Conference witli the Minister for Public Works. [Special to the " Star."] WELLINGTON, Oct. 2fi. Messrs Frederick Jones (Heathcote), and W. P. Eeeves (St Albana) waited on ! the Minister for Public Works this morning, to suggest two useful and remunerative undertakings immediately available in the case of the Canterbury unemployed. The first of these was a shallow cutting at the mouth of the Halswell river, between the Ahuriri lagoon and Lake Ellesmere. It was pointed out that by cutting a drain in a straight line for two miles and three-quarters, a proper outlet might be provided for the Halswell, and the great and increasing nuisance of floods in the locality done away with finally. The land in the neighbourhood is not only very valuable, but much of it iB Btill in the hands of tho Govornment. The other work suggested was a road in the Whiteeliifs district to open up the mineral resources of the Malverns ; but, other things being equal, it was agreed that the Halswell work, as being much the nearest to Christchuroh, should have preference. Mr Mitehelson discussed the suggestions at some length, and promised to confer with his colleagues and have the matter enquired into without any delay. .... i, i i
