RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Fortnightly Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of the above ■ Council was held last evening; present — j His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors j Thompson, Cone, Gulliver, Manning, Good, Luxton and Jennings. C'ORRESI'ONDENCE. The following was read : — From the Mandevilleandßangiora Eoad | Board, declining to bear part of cosb of i reforming and widening the roadway on j the West Town belt, ac they did not think the work the necessary. The letter waa allowed to lay on the table. From Mr D. Graham, requesting the Council to place a br.dge over the deep channel recently cut opposite the entrance to his paddock. The Works Committee were instructed to inspect and report. REFOiITS. The Works Committee reported (1) That the drain in Avon street and that in Newnham street had been cleaned out, the latter by the residents. (2) The contract for re-forming George street had been comI menced, but the contractor asked for an extension of time' for the completion of the shingling, which request the Committee recommended should be granted. (3) Mr Buckley had commenced his contract of re-forming the West Town Belt. (4) The clay from the drain in Archdeacon Dudley's paddock was being carted away as agreed upon; and to expedite the work an extra horse and dray j had been hired. (5) Mr Lilly having objected to the storm-water from the south side of Brook street flowing into his ditch, it had been found necessary to lead it into the railway drain. The report being considered satisfactory wan adopted. The Surveyor asked for instructions respecting the collection of the dog tax, and he was empowered to employ a ranger to look up unregistered dogs. FINANCIAL. The receipts for the month were reported to be JBlft 19s, and the bank credit balance, JJI9 12s 6d. Accounts amounting to JEGI Ss were passed for payment. UNEMPLOYED. Four of the unemployed of the Borough waited upon the Council to ask for work. The Mayor stated that he expected to obtain work for some of the unemployed from the Government shortly ; and it was agreed to find a few days' employment for the applicants. MISCELLANEOUS. Three tenders for the supply of kerosene were received, and that of Mr F. Gulliver, at 17a per c«se, accepted. Mr W. Kennedy attended and made a full explanation with reference to his action in erecting a slaughter-house within the Borough boundaries ; and the explanation being deemed satisfactory, it* was resolved to allow him to slaughter on the premises until the expiration of his lease (four years), provided the place was not complained of as a nuisance and the license fee3be paid. The question of the amount of the iicenso fee for slaughter-houses was brought up, and a motion to the effect that the charge should be £5 per annum, was made ; bub this was withdrawn in favour of an amendment that the matter should be deferred till the next meeting for further consideration.The Council then adjourned.
