UNDER THE STEAMER'S BOTTOM.
* The captain of a Cliannel steamer was the other day much pestered by a female passenger, who not once or twice, but repeatedly asked him how far they were from land. The skipper, never a ve,ry communicative or genial man, answered her enquiries for a while, but at length, growing out of patience -with her frequent I interruptions, he merely grunted out in [reply to her reiterated queries, "Just a mile, Tnqm ! " "A mile!" echoed the pertinaceoua passenger. " A mile! " and, then, looking around and seeing n 0 sign o? land, the added, sharply, "and in what direction, please ? " It would seem that the captain had expected this enquiry, for, giving another of his guttural grunts, he replied— " Straight under the steamer's bottom, mum," and, turning sharply on his heel, signalled "Full speed ahead" to the engine-room.
