Mr Lance at Sefton.

Mr J. D. Lance addressed the eleotor3 of Cheviot in the Town Hall, Sefton, on Tuesday evening. Mr Vaughan was voted to the chair, and briefly introduced the speaker, who, on coming forward, was greeted with cheers. Mr Lance explained that he did not intend making a political speech, but had called this meeting on purpose to refute the scurrilous accusations used by his opponent's supporters in this district. He (Mr Lance) said should any of his supporters be guilty of such dishonourable conduct he would cut their acquaintance for ever. Mr Lance then went on, giving a resv/m6 of his actions in Parliament since he was returned as member for Cheviot, proving that he had the entire confidence of the parties to which he belonged, and also the respect of the Opposition, and proving most emphatically that those vile reports were nothing but the production of malicious and evil-dis-posed persons. During his address he was frequently warmly applauded, and at the conclusion he answered a great number of questions in a most satisfactory manner. Mr Thomas Hanna proposed, a vote of thanks and renewed confidence, remarking when Mr Lance last stood for the district he was one of his strongest opponents, but having had an opportunity of testing his genuine qualities he now considered him the best that had ever represented the district. This was seconded by Mr C. ff. Pemberton witb some appropriate remarks. Mr Ensor then proposed an amendment, a vote of thanks with no confidence, which was seconded by some person calling himself Mayor of Balcairn. Mr Ensor, in speaking to his motion, made a vigorous attack on the present Government and itß supporters. Before the motion or amendment could be put to the meeting large numbers of the Messrs Ensor and Macfarlane'a contingent were leaving the hall, when three hearty cheers were given for Mr Lance, and three groans for Mr Maefarlane.
