LINWOOD TOWN BOARD.

Yesterday evening the Christ's College Rifles, B Company First Canterbury, mustered at their orderly-room to bid farewell to their senior subaltern, Lieutenant W. E. Mellish, who is about to leave Christchurch in order to reside in Palmerston North. The room was handsomely decorated with evergreens and flags, and a well-spread table furnished means of social enjoyment. Captain Harper presided, and in addition to the members of the Company, several visitors were present, among them being Lieufc,-Colonel Tosswill, Major Richards, Hon. Surgeon Irving, Captains Martin and Hart, Lieutenant Harris, and Mr H. A. Scott, the first captain of the College Rifles. The health of Her Majesty the Queen and the toast of "The Army, Navy, and Volunteers " were honoured, and the latter responded to by Colonel Tosswill, Major Richards, Staff-Bugler Ashton, a veteran of over 50 years' service, and Private Cox. The health of the old members was then proposed by Lieutenant Mellish, and responded to by Captain- Martin and Messrs H. A. Scott and Beswick. Captain Harper next proposed the toast of the evening — j "Health and Prosperity to Lieutenant Mellish." He reviewed the excellent service rendered to the corp3 by Mr Mellish, who was one of the original members, and rose from the ranks to iiis present position. Captain Harper also expressed the very deep regret; felt by all members of the Company at losing their senior subaltern, and their earnest wish for his future success. He then on behalf of the corps presented Mr Mellish with a handsome marble timepiece, bearing a silver plate suitably inscribed. ColourSergeant Smith, on behalf of the noncomnxiasioned officers, and Private Digby on the part of the men, spoke in similar terms of warm approbation. The toast was enthusiastically drunk, the battalion loving cup beinghandedrouni. Lieutenant Mellish replied, thanking his comrades for their kindly expressions and valuable gift, and expressing a hope that the College Rifles would maintain their present Btate of efficiency, and would never allow the loving cup, which they won last season, to be wrested from them. He also made several suggestions for the future welfare I of the company, one of the principal being i that a Morris tube range should be I established. At the close of bis remarks j his health was again drunk by his comrades. The other toasts were " The First Canter- | bury Battalion," proposedby Capt. Martin, I and responded to by Colonel Tosswill— who urged the great necessity for cultivating a spirit of union among the various Companies ; " Other Corpß," proposed by Sergeant-Major Hanmer, and responded to by Captain Hart; "The Honorary Members," proposed by Lance-Corporal Tripp, and responded to by Mr E. Curry j "The Ladies," proposed by Sergeant Stow, and responded to by Sergeant Webb and LanceCorporal Buchanan; and "The Press." Ere concluding, the visitors drank the health of their hosts, the Christ's College Eifles._ Several admirable songs were sung, in a style reflecting great credit on the musical abilities of the members, and " A-old Lang Syne" brought a very pleasant evening to a close. After this Lieutenant Mellish, in accordance with proper custom, was carried from the room shoulder high by his comrades.
