Mr Ayers Explains.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAE.
Sir, — In reference to a letter appearing in the Lyttelton Times this morning, signed E. H. Maun, in respect to the report of my address appearing in that paper on Jan. 22 la'sfe, in which I am reported as follows : — " He was a supporter of the Government, which he contended was the best that had occupied the benches for a very long number of years, hut lie would hold himself free to take an independent course, if they acted in a way he could not approve." This does not state lam an Independent candidate. I never said I was, neither am I. For my part I believe entirely in party Government. I have always avowed and still maintain my allegiance to the Stout- Vogel Government and their policy. What I said and what I mean is this : That all the wliile the Government carry out honestly the programme enunciated, I am in the ranks of their followers, and shall there remain as long as they continue to merib the confidence of the Colony ; but should their actions in the future forfeit this, I hold myself fres in any course I deem it necessary to adopt in the true interests of those I seek to represent. — I am, &c, A. AVERS.
