Heathcote Inconsistency.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE " STAB."

Sib, — At Mr Hopkins' meeting held at Ashboume on Sept. 16 the following question was put to Mr Hopkins: — "Did you state, when speaking .at Waltham, that your reason for opposing Mr Jones on the present occasion was owing to his having voted for the Tariff proposals of the Government?" Mr Hopkinß: "Yes." In answer to the question, " How long have you been opposed to the Government?" Mr Hopkins said, " I have been in active opposition since the first of June." "Have you since that time urged Mr Jones to declare himself as a candidate for Heathcote, at the same time promising to use your influence in securing his (Mr Jones') return ?" Mr Hopkins : " I have not done bo." Now, 1 have been credibly informed that Mr Hopkins did promise to support Mr Jones' candidature on the present occasion three weeks later than, according to Mr Hopkina' own statement, he was in active opposition to the present Government proposals. Now, if Mr Hopkins has been guilty of Buch a flagrant piece of inconsistency, it is only right, in justice to the electors of Heathcote, that they should be made aware of the fact.— l am, &c,
