INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

An ordinary meeting of the Committee of the Industrial Association was held last night; present— Messrs G. T.. Booth (in the chair), E. C. Ashby, E. H. Banks, F. Jenkins, H. B. Kirk, R. Buchanan, A. W. Beaven, J. Glanville, L. Adams, J. Mercer, J. L. Scott, T. Danks, H. J. Shaw. Apologies were received from Messrs A. G. Howland, E. Ford, F. Jc_es, and L. Bergh. A letter was read from the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers, asking the Association to send a delegate to the Conference of delegates from kindred Associations, to be held at Adelaide, South Australia, to discuss the question of reciprocity of free trade between the Colonies. Mr E. H. Banks moved, Mr H. B. Kirk seconded, and it was carried — "That a reply be sent to the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers that the Association regreta the want of funds and the shortness of notice will prevent them from sending a delegate to the proposed Conference. At Boma future time the Association will do their best to meet the wishes of the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers with a view to consider matters affecting commercial relations with New Zealand." Mr J. M'Kain Meek wrote, offering to give a lecture, under the auspices of the Association, on th© unutilised resources of the Colony, having reference especially to the establishment of fish conservatories. It was decided to inform Mr Meek that the Committee would be glad if he would read a half-hour paper on the subject at the next general meeting of the Association on Oct. 26.

A letter was received from E. C. Brown, suggesting that the Committee should consider the desirability of issuing, under the auspices of the Association, a complete list of all articles of local manufacture to every i household throughout Canterbury, accompanied by a circular setting forth their great advantages to the community, and requesting that the list might be posted ia a prominent position in the house and consulted previous to purchases being made. The letter was ordered to be acknowledged with thanks, and consideration thereof deferred until noxt meeting. A letter was read from the Public Works Department, accompanying copies of the following works forwarded by direction of the Hon E. Richardson :— "Report on the Mining Industry of New Zealand, 3857," and "An Account of New Zealand Scale Insects, by W. M. Maskell, 1887." The letter waa ordered to be acknowledged with thanks.

Consideration of the Customs Tariff waa postponed till nest meeting. After some routine business, the Committee adjourned.
