Southbridgo Town Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on Thursday, Sept. 8, all the members, including the newly-elected one, being preaent. The Clerk asked for a_d wa3 granted leave for the evening oh account of private affairs. Correspondence was read from :-— The Clerk of the Ellesmere Boad Board, replying to the Town Board's application for the right to use shingle from the gravel pits near Southbridge, to the effect that the gravel could be obtained at the usual rate, viz., lid per yard. Prom the Geraldine Town Board re main or county roads.

From the Manager of the Union Bank, Southbridge, re overdraft.

It was resolved that the Board communicate with the County Council asking if the Town Board had any right to the shingle reserves; also asking them to define what roads, if any, within the Town District are under the jurisdiction of the Selwyn County Council. The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the letter from the Geraldine Town Board, and that the subject matter of their letter be left in abeyance till a reply had been received from the County Council. A letter was read from Mr E. Winter asking that the road running through his property be leased to him. It was decided to grant a lease at -£1 per annum. An application was received from Mr S. Wickliff asking that Mr J. Dynes' name be substituted on the roll instead of his, respecting Section No. 2, Taumutu street.

Mr R. Richards wrote, asking for a slaughtering license. The matter was left in the bands of the Chairman.

A petition was read from residents on North Rakaia street, asking that the ditch on the south Bide be cleaned out for a distance of thirteen chains. It was resolved— "That considering the financial position of the Board, no new work be undertaken."

The paysheet, amounting to .£2O 17s Bd, was passed for payment.

It was decided, in accordance with the resolution tabled last Board night, that the Clerk receive one month's notice, and that the Audit Committee, consisting of Messrs Campbell and Low, take over the books.

The meeting then adjourned till Monday, Sept. 17.
