Sydney, August 20. Sir Alfred Stephon attained his 85th year to-day.
The b.s. Binau, from llong Kong, has. been ordered into quarantine, as her Chinese passengers are suffering from a modified form of small-pox, it is believed, contracted at Port Darvyin, where the vessel called. The most stringent • precautions have bfien taken.
Major Dane has made a. good impression as a lecturer, but his audiences are small, owing probably to the weather. Diphtheria is prevalent at Narandera, whero several deaths have taken place. A sale took place yesterday of a number of articles belonging to Lord Augustus Lof tvs, including many presentation pieces. The Newcastle district miners have certain grievances, but it is not believed they will lead to a strike.
A fresh agitation has been raised for the removal of the reredos from the* cathedral.
