Local & General.

The Eon thb Treasubeb. — Sir Julius Yogel left for Ashburton by the mid-day train to-day. In the evening hri will speak at the hall. On Friday Sir Julius visits the Ashburton Woollen Factory.

Volunteer Parade. — The following Companies paraded at the Christchurch Drillßhed for musketry instruction by Colonel Tosswill : — Mounted Rifles (Lieuta Acton-Adams and Eeece), Engineers, 40 (Captain Webster), besides 33 casuals.

Musical Society. — The first combined practice of the orchestra and chorus took place on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance. The practice will be continued until the public performance of " Eli," the date to depend upon progress of the work.

The Lynch Family Bellringers.— This company of instrumentalists and vocalists, after a lengthy absence from Christchurch, give the first of a series of concerts at the Theatre Royal this evening, and doubtless will meet with the earns agreeable reception they have hitherto been accorded in this city. An excellent programme has been prepared, and the attendance should be a large one, especially in view of the fact that we have not had a professional company here for some time.

Complimentary Bali.. — The ball given to the City Councillors by the citizens who had been their guests at the "At Homes " in the Municipal Chambers during the last winter, took place last night at the Oddfellows' Hall, JLiichfield street. Most of the Councillors were present, and the company numbered about seventy couples. Music was supplied hy Mr Thomas Fleming's band, and refreshments by Mr James Freeman ; and the arrangements were carried out in good style by the Committee, namely, Messrs H. Thomson, P. J. Smith, Carl, Standish, Wagataff, Fuhrinann, Warner, and L. Harris (Secretary). The hall waa nicely decorated, and presented a very pretty and animated appearance. Dancing was continued to an early hour, and a. most enjoyable evening was spent. LytteltonNavals.— Afterthe musketry [ inspection by Lieutenant-Colonel Tosswill jon Monday evening last, the Lyttelton Naval Artillery assembled in the Drillshed for an evening's enjoyment, whioh took j i the form of a social gathering. Good ■ things in endless variety were provided, I and one and all set themselves the task of spending a most enjoyable time, and it need hardly be said that iv this connection all succeeded. The handsome silver cups won by the Company at the Volunteer sports on May 24 were inspected during the evening. The usual loyal toasts were proposed and responded to, and these, interspersed by songs, &c, kept the proceedings lively until a late hour in the evening. The chief toasts were "The Queen and Royal Family," proposed by Captain J. Rose, and responded to by Lieutenant Arnold, " N Battery, N.Z.8.A.," ■responded to by Lieutenants M'lntyre and Brice, and " The Non-commissioned Officers," responded to by Chief P.O. Toomey.

j Waxmakabiih Bak.— Notice has been ? sent to the Marine Department that the following temporary signals will be used at the pilot station until the new flagstaff : is erected :— White flag, blue equare in centre, -indicates stand on and take the bar; red pennant, bar dangerous; blue pennant, put to sea. Vessels coming over bar to be steered by red flag shown at staff ; flag will be shown at either side of staff to indicate the course the veaeel may be required to steer; when the flag is down, vessel is to keep on her course.
