LABOUR BUREAU.
The Board of Advice.
A meeting of the Board of Advice of the Canterbury Labour Bureau was held at the Immigration Office, at 2 p.m. to-day ; present — Messrs J. H. Baker (Chairman), — M'Millan, R. Westenra, and J. E.March (Secretary). Mr March reported that since the establishment of the Bureau, 330 applications for work had been received, of which 221 were from married men, and 115 single men. Out of these about ninety-nine had been placed out to work at Kaituna, on the railway works and under the Drainage Board. The private demand for labour was, as he knew through travelling through the country, almost nil ; and where there was any demand it was supplied by the Village Settlement people. There were now before the Board 257 applications for work, many of which were from men incapable of leaving the town. Since last meeting twenty men had been sent to Kaikoura, but this number had been deducted from the total on the list. Out of the 100 who could be given work at Kaikoura, sixty had been sent there. The question was, what were they to do with the remainder ?
A discussion ensued, in which the necessity for getting work for these men was folly recognised, and the advisability of putting some of them, at piece work on stone breaking, was gone into. It wa3 decided to urge on the Government the necessity of providing Borne work for the men.
