GREAT FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

Twenty Dwellings and

Six Shops.

Loss, Over £6000.

[Pee Press Association.]

AUC

ililND, Atjgtjst 25.

A great fire occured at Eden Terrace this morning, causing a loss of over £6000. It broke out at 12.30 in a small house occupied by Mi Flewellyn, near the Riding School, and, fanned by the south-east gale, extended and spread across the street. It destroyed Sandall's two - storey block, Hill's large two-storey block following. The fire next spread to the adjoining side streets, and before it could be checked twenty dwellings and 6ix shops were burned down. The flames raged fiercely for over two hours, and swept an area of four acres square, on which wooden buildings were closely built.

The insurances, so far as known, are : — Hill'B block, .£IBOO in the Union} Hill's chemist stock, J>3oo in the Eoyal, and furniture .£BO in .the South British ; Patterson's cottages, J8550, divided between the Royal, New Zealand, and South British, most of the furniture being uninsured; machinery, at the Biding school, .£l7O, in the Norwich Union.

There is no water supply in the district. The Salvage Corps and a detachment from H.M.S. Opal did good service in checking the fire. Two shops in Hill's block were unoccupied. Three attempts have been made to cause an incendiary fire in that block on previous occasions. A movement is on foot to have a water supply for the district, and a loan was authorised some time ago.
