Dissatisfaction at the proclamation re the Irish National League is becoming widespread, and it has leaked out that Lord Hartington strongly opposed the proclaiming, and expostulated with the Government, urging that it was unnecessary and illadvised. Ruined Vineyards. Phylloxera is causing immense destruction in the Rhine Valley vineyards, and hope of checking- its ravages is almost abandoned. ' It is feared that many of the vineyards have been destroyed. Antwerp Wool Sales. At the Antwerp wool sales, 6000 bales remain to be sold. Argentine Loan. The New Hebrides. fhe newspaper. lie Soldi, in an article discussing the New Hebrides question, suggests that France should seek such recompense from England for the occupation of the group as would be acceptable to tbe latter. The desire for such recompense is, Le Sbleil declares, England's sole motive in opposing French occupation. LONDON, August 24. An Unfounded Report. The report to hand yesterday from Afghanistan via Merv of the Ameer's illness is proved to have been unfounded.

The following are the results of the Chess Tournament up to the present : — Charlick defeated Krewe; Ciffe defeated Herman of New South Wales; Tullidge (Victoria) defeated Hookham (New Zealand) j Esling (Victoria) defeated Wilton ; Gossip (New South Waleß) defeated Hall. The scores are as follows: — Charlick, 6 points ; Gossip, 6£ ; Esling, 5. The other players are now out of the tournament.
