FIRES.

WOODVILLE, July 26. A house occupied by a railway porter was burned down last night. It was insured for £200 in the Northern Insurance Company.
HOKITIKA, July 26. A fire occurred last night at Bimu. A miner's cottage was destroyed. The owner, named Nelson, was absent, and a neighbour rescued his wife and threa children at great risk. They were half suffocated by the smoke at the time, and were only saved in their night-dresse3. Everything else ■was destroyed. A fire at the Bank of New Zealand, Ross, this afternoon, was arrested before much damage was done. The agent's household furniture was much damaged by water.
INVERCAEGILL, July 26,
The house of Thomas Davidson, a farmer, at Wyndham, was burnt this morning. Nothing was saved. The fire was caused by dogs upsetting a lamp while hunting rats. Insurance : — New Zealand Office, .£IOO on the furniture, and £150 on the house.
