THE SPORTS.
match, in costume. The get-up of some of the players was exceedingly good, and their antics kept the crowd in roars of laughter. A mufE cricket match was also played, and much fun was caused by the uee of a hollow bat, from which a cat and a rabbit escaped during the progress of the game. A publican's booth, superintended by Mr W. Burnip, and a confectioner's stall, belonging to Mr Eobinson, provided creature comforts, and refreshments were liberally dispensed to the children by the Committee. At one o'clock there must have been fully 1500 people on the ground, but the rain coming on heavier drove many home. Quite half the people in the town did not, on account of I the wet, attend the sports. The following were the events got oft : — Fire Brigade Race, 220yds. First prize, £1; second, 7s Gd— J. Hayman, 1; F. Teague, 2. Boys' Race, under 14, 120yds. First prize, 15s } second, ss— Murray, 1 ; Humphreys, 2. Bayonet Display by the Kaiapoi Volunteer Corps.— This event proved very interesting. The men engaged went through the exercises in an extremely creditable manner, considering that they had been in practice only a week or two. . . Orang-outang Race, 300yds. First prize, 20a ; seoond, 7s Gd— F. Day, 1 j Goodwin, 2. Volunteer Race, 220yds. First prize, 20s ; second, 7s Gd— Private Graham, 1 ; Private Wilmot, 2. Sailor's Hornpipe. First prize, 30s ; second, 10a— G. Hayland, 1 ; Lyndsay, 2. Sword Dance. Prize, 20s— Banks, 1 ; T. M'Kay, 2. . Highland Fling. Prize, 40s— Banks, 1 ; T. M'Kay, 2. Tug-of- War, 10 men a-side. Prize, .£3— Kaiapoi Football Club, 1; Cure Boating Club, 2. , L , Wrestling Match, Cumberland style, under 12st. First prize, 30s ; second, 10s— R. Petrie, 1 ; J. Higgins, 2. In the evening the town was illuminated, and a display of fireworks and torchlight procession took place under the auspices of the local Fire Brigade," who were assisted by several visiting firemen from Chriatchurch and Rangiora.
The programme of sports included many attractive events, but the bad state of the weather, which did not improve as the day wore on, prevented some from being got off, and also lessened the entries. The most amusing feature was the football
