The Orient steamer Lusitania arrived to-day. [Pkb Press Association.] AUCKLAND CITY ESTIMATES. RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION TENDEKS. BODIES POUND. AUCKLAND, Apbil 27. It now tranepireß that the Mayor was not asked by the deputation on Saturday to deliver an address to the Earl of Aberdeen, Mr Dargaville, M.H.R., having been Belected to perform that duty. The Auckland City estimates for the | ensuing year are as follows • — Proposed expenditure, £20,800 ; UghtiDg, £18.000 ; \ fire brigade, £15,000; advertising offices, £800 ; salaries, £400 ; sinking fund, .£2250 ; contingencies, £254 ; total, £33,691. The moneys available are — Rent, £9000 ; licenses and fees, £6000 $ total, £15.000. The amount required is £18,191. Grand total, J832. 691. A rate of I 1 per cent in the £ on the total rateable value of £36,826 will be required to meet the above £18,191. The following tenders were received for ; the Ngatra contract of the Thames Valley ! and Rotorua railway : — Accepted : Daniel Fallon, Auckland, £34,785. Declined : J. C. Booth, Hamilton, £35 917; Coates and Metcalf, Hamilton, £35,308 ; Larkins and O'Brien, Auckland, £38,670; John Briton, Auckland, £43,860. Mr J. Gilmore, recently returned from a trip to England, has accepted an invitation from the Baptist Church, Ponaonby, to occupy the platform for some months, and commences next Sunday. At a special meeting of the Preßbjtery yesterday, called to consider the disagreement between the Rev A. Mackenzie and his Avondale congregation, Mr Mackenzie was requested to resign. Lushington's stables at East Taruaki were burned down on Monday. They were insured for £550 in the United Company, j A dead body, believed to be that of Grant, who disappeared from the Old Men's Refuge a fortnight ago, was found on the beach at Hobsonville. The dead body of a gum digger, named Woodward, was found in the gumfield, four miles from Dargaville. The deceased was last seen alive hist night, and appeared quite well. A man named Robert Thompson attempted to cut his throat at Ponaonby. He iB stated to have been suffering from j melancholy for some time past. It is not I known whether the injuries will prove fatal.
